The Substance Abuse Violence Education (or S.A.V.E.) Program provides for uniformed police officers to enter the schools and teach fifth grade students about the dangers of drug use and violence. The S.A.V.E. program was developed in 2000 by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department and was adopted for use by the Milford Police Department in 2002. The program's goal is to combat the problems of drug use and violence among the youth in the community through education. S.A.V.E. also helps to establish a positive relationship between the students and police officers.

Once a week, for eight weeks a certified S.A.V.E. officer enters the classroom as a teacher and positive role model. The main focus of the program is on substance abuse and awareness, along with violence prevention. Lesson plans include; gateway drugs, consequences, decision making, positive alternatives and dealing with violence. S.A.V.E. encourages active student participation including teamwork and role modeling.

Each week new definitions and assignments are completed in the S.A.V.E. student workbooks. At the end of the program the students keep their workbooks as a reference guide for remaining drug-free. Students are encouraged to speak with their parents about lessons learned in S.A.V.E. The success of the program relies not only on the education the students receive in the classroom, but also on the help and support the students receive from parents and other family members in the home.

The final step in the S.A.V.E. program is the graduation ceremony. Graduation is an important event for the students. It allows for the recognition of achievement for the hard work and dedication put forth by the students throughout the eight week session.

The Milford Police Department currently has two certified S.A.V.E. instructors who teach the program to the fifth grade students at Baker, Johnson and Kurtz elementary schools. The program is presented to the students during the second semester of school, beginning in January. The S.A.V.E. program has been very successful in Milford largely due to the tremendous support the program has received from school officials, students and parents.
